Toyohari Japanese Acupuncture

& Moxibustion

Acupuncture chart from the Ming dynasty (c. 1368 – c. 1644)I practice a specialized and highly refined branch of Japanese Acupuncture known as Toyohari.

While traditional acupuncture is well-known for its effectiveness, Toyohari represents a more subtle, non-invasive evolution of the craft. It is particularly suited for those seeking a gentle experience, sensitive individuals, or anyone who feels hesitant about traditional needles.

What Makes Toyohari Different?

Toyohari was developed in Japan by practitioners who refined their sense of touch to an extraordinary degree. Unlike many Western or Chinese styles that rely on deep needle insertion to achieve a “sensation,” Toyohari focuses on the meridian therapy approach.

Non-Insertive Techniques: Much of the treatment involves “contact needling,” where the needle touches or hovers just above the skin’s surface. This stimulates the body’s vital energy (Qi) without breaking the skin.

Specialist Silver Tools: We utilize unique hand-crafted tools made of gold, silver, and stainless steel to stroke, rub, or tap specific points, providing a deeply relaxing and therapeutic effect.

Instant Feedback: A hallmark of the Toyohari style is continuous pulse diagnosis. I check your pulse throughout the session to get “live” feedback on how your body is responding to the treatment, allowing for a truly bespoke experience.

The Power of Japanese Moxibustion

Moxibustion (or “Moxa”) is an integral part of the Japanese tradition and is thought to be older than acupuncture itself. It involves the warming of specific points using high-grade Mugwort (Artemisia Princeps). In the Toyohari style, we use two primary techniques depending on your body’s needs:

  • Okyu (Thread-sized Moxa): This involves applying tiny, rice-grain-sized cones of moxa to the skin. It provides a brief, focused “spark” of heat that is exceptionally effective for acute pain and boosting the immune system.

  • Chinetsukyu (Warming Moxa): This “perception of heat” technique uses larger, cone-shaped moxa. Unlike Okyu, the cone is removed as soon as you feel a pleasant, spreading warmth. This is deeply nourishing and is perfect for treating “cold” conditions, chronic muscle tension, and systemic fatigue.

What Can Toyohari Help With?

Because Toyohari works primarily by balancing the nervous and endocrine systems, it is effective for a wide range of conditions:

  • Pain Management: Back pain, sciatica, migraines, and arthritis.
  • Stress & Emotional Health: Anxiety, insomnia, and low mood.
  • Women’s Health: Hormonal balance, fertility support, and menopausal symptoms.
  • Chronic Fatigue: Restoring vital energy and supporting recovery from long-term illness.

Your Treatment Journey

Each session is a collaborative process. We begin with a detailed consultation covering your medical history, sleep, diet, and emotional well-being.

The Toyohari Diagnostic Touch

Diagnosis in this style is incredibly tactile. I will gently palpate your abdomen, arms, and legs. In Japanese medicine, the abdomen is considered the “Hara”—the center of the body’s energy. This physical assessment, combined with wrist pulse reading, allows me to identify the root cause of your symptoms rather than just treating the surface pain.

Integrated Clinical Expertise

While my primary focus is the Toyohari style (following an intensive 8-month post-graduate program), my clinical background is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and advanced methods such as Dr. Tan’s Balance Method and Master Tung. This allows me to integrate structural techniques with the refined energetic work of Japanese medicine to ensure the best possible outcome for your health.
